But from a population perspective, Australia has only 20 million people, which is a fraction of the US's 295 million.

To say that Europeans were credited with discovering Australia, is sadly comic. Abel Tasman, of the Dutch East India Company, is credited with starting key exploration. (Tasmania is named after him.) Tasman's discovery was a little bit late. He was doing his work around 1640 AD. The current view is that the Aboriginals of Australia arrived a little earlier - 50,000 years a little earlier. The famous landing of Captain James Cook and the Endeavour at Botany Bay did not occur until 1770. Cook's entry in his journal regarding the native Aboriginals was "all they seemed to want for us was to be gone."

Now, in the 21st century, many people want to visit Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 4.7 million international visitors travelled to Australia in 2003. Since 1993 the growth rate of Australian trips has been about 5%.
